Coins, XP, and Cosmetics: What's the Point?

The reward system in Tunnel isn't just decoration. Here's how XP, coins, and cosmetics are designed to reinforce real study habits.

Tunnel has a whole cosmetics shop, XP levels, and a coin economy. This might seem like a distraction from the actual studying. It isn't.

XP tracks your effort

Every completed minute on the focus timer earns XP. Manually logged time is recorded separately. XP accumulates into levels, and your level can appear on your profile and friend card; it is a record inside Tunnel, not independent proof of attention or learning.

This creates an honest signal. A level 40 user has genuinely put in time. That makes the leveling feel real, and real things motivate.

Coins reward consistency

Coins come from study minutes (one coin per 15 minutes on the free plan, one per 7 on Premium), and from daily streaks and goals. Premium users also get 15 bonus coins daily.

The daily cap on free study coins means you can't grind them overnight, you have to come back tomorrow. This is intentional. It rewards consistency, not marathon sessions.

Cosmetics are the goal

The shop has themes, XP bar styles, friend card glows, timer number effects, and more. The point of cosmetics isn't the cosmetic itself, it's having something to save toward. A specific goal you're working toward makes daily study feel purposeful beyond the schoolwork itself.

Some cosmetics are Premium-exclusive. Most aren't. Free users have plenty to unlock.

Badges

Badges are permanent. They reflect real milestones: first study session, 7-day streak, 50 hours of study, and more. They stack on your profile and can't be bought, only earned.

What the reward system can and cannot tell you

XP and coins represent recorded effort inside Tunnel. They do not measure grades, comprehension or the difficulty of a subject. Two students can study for the same time and need completely different strategies. The useful comparison is usually your own pattern over time.

Use rewards without gaming your study

  • Choose the study outcome first and the cosmetic reward second.
  • Do not leave the timer running when you stop working.
  • Use Analytics to check whether one subject is collecting nearly all of your time.
  • Treat a badge as a record of a milestone, not a reason to study while exhausted.

Tunnel deliberately keeps cosmetics separate from academic results. A theme or badge can make returning enjoyable, while the study log remains available for the more important question: what did you spend time working on?
